WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Softball team (24-7, 9-3 SCIAC) swept their road doubleheader with Whittier College Saturday afternoon taking Game 1, 9-4 and Game 2, 5-0.
Game 1 (W, 9-4)
Leila Jackson (Vallejo, CA) singled home Paige Messenlehner (Fresno, CA) giving Redlands an early 1-0 lead in the first. Adyson Kim (Millbrae, CA) then homered in the second pushing the lead to 2-0. That was the first career home run for Kim.
The Poets responded with three runs in the third, two coming off a home run, and the fourth run scored on a single in the fourth.
The very next half inning the Bulldogs responded with a five spot. Brooklyn Bard (Garden Grove, CA) flew out driving in Messenlehner. Natalie Lowthers (Wrightwood, CA) then allowed Jackson and Camille Enriquez (Lamont, CA) to score for a 5-4 lead.
Kim added two more RBI's to her total with a two-run single into left center for a 7-4 advantage. The final two runs came in the seventh when Kim lined out for a sacrifice fly to right plating Isabella Culp (Bayliss, CA) and Jenay Scott (Merced, CA) would score on an error.
Messenlehner had a three-hit game. Bard, Jackson, Scott, and Kim had two hits each. Lowthers did not have a hit, but she drove in two and walked twice. Kim had four of the nine RBI's. Kaylen Galaviz (Yuba City, CA) got the start and went 4.0 Innings but gave up four runs on six hits. She left with the no decision. Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA) came in relief and threw the next 1.2 Innings not allowing a run or hit, while collecting her tenth win on the season.
Game 2 (W, 5-0)
The game was scoreless through three innings before a Poet error allowed Scott to score what would be the eventual game-winning run. That was the first of four consecutive innings with a run scored for the Bulldogs.
In the fifth Scott brought home Jackson on an RBI-groundout.
Messenlehner made it 3-0 in the sixth on a single up the middle. Kim then singled on a bunt that scored two for a 5-0 lead in the seventh.
Paige Ellinger (Temecula, CA) had another strong game three start, going seven scoreless with six strikeouts and only five hits allowed on 72 pitches.
