ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team grinded out a 4-3 win over No. 39 Chapman University Saturday afternoon picking up their fifth win on the season.
The Bulldogs fell behind early 1-0 following doubles with the lone win coming at No. 2 from
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) and
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) who rolled 6-1.
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) were broken late at 6-4 and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) were edged 6-3 on the last line.
This did not deter the Bulldogs though taking four of six singles matches. Deng cruised at No. 1 6-1, 6-4, Brady came away with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2, and Whelan grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5. Chapman grabbed a point at No. 4 with O'Brien falling 6-3, 6-2 and another at No. 6 coming in a three setter. Kumar came from a set down to force a third but would get beat 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.
Brown was the last match on at No. 3 and she too went the distance coming from a set down to pull out the clinch 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Redlands returns to the courts next Friday, April 11 when they host Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 4:00pm inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.
