CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team opened up the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Wednesday afternoon falling 4-0 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the Semi-Finals.
The match was played to clinch with the Athenas picking up the doubles point and then three singles matches.
In doubles CMS picked up a pair of quick wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles.
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) would drop 6-1 followed by
Maegan Deng (Redondo Beach, CA) and
Deja Brown (San Diego, CA) dropping 6-2 at the top spot. This gave the Athenas the early advantage. The last match on was at No. 2 with
Christine O'Brien (Leawood, KS) and
Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) in a 4-4 deadlock, but they were forced to stop once the point was clinched.
In singles the momentum carried over for CMS as they earned wins at No. 6 with Kumar falling 6-1, 6-1, No. 4 with Whelan dropping 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 5 with O'Brien combining for three games in a 6-0, 6-3 loss.
The Top-3 in the lineup were still on court when the match was called. Brown was down 6-0, 5-0 at No. 3, but Brady was up at No. 2 6-2, 3-0 and Deng was leading 7-5 at the top-spot.
Redlands now waits and sees if they earn an At-Large berth into the upcoming NCAA Division III National Championships.
