Bulldog Men’s Tennis advances past Caltech in SCIAC Tournament Semi-Final | Take on Stags in Championship

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team advanced to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Championship match following a 4-1 victory over Caltech in the Semi-Finals Thursday night.

The Bulldogs needed almost five hours to beat the Beavers following a lengthy rain delay that came through the Verdieck Tennis Center when the score was 2-1 UR.  With the win the Maroon and Grey improve to 13-5, 6-1 SCIAC and extend their winning streak to six matches dating back to April 5.

For the second straight meeting between these two teams Caltech would take the early doubles point.  Josh Davydov (Bellevue, WA) and Vitomir Petcov (Portland, OR) cruised at No. 3 6-2 putting UR on top.  But at No. 2 CIT would level things with MJ Abarca (San Diego, CA) and Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) getting edged 6-4.

The decisive point came at the top spot from Dominic Anderson (Brisbane, Australia) and Jack Fanshawe (Brisbane, Australia) who played the top duo from the Beavers to a tiebreaker ultimately falling 7-6 (2).
In singles the Bulldogs regrouped like they did against Caltech the last time they matched up, which was only four days ago.  Fanshawe played No. 6 for the Bulldogs and leveled things with a 6-0, 6-3 win and that sparked a run by the Maroon and Grey with Anderson sweeping his opponent at No. 1 6-3, 6-2 pushing the score to 2-1.  Then the rain came, soaking the courts forcing the match into a delay.

Once the two teams returned to the court four matches were still in action, three of which were in three sets.  The third point on the evening came from Jack Hinkle (Bountiful, UT) who rallied from a set down at No. 5 to pull off a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision.  The clinch then came from Petcov at No. 3 who jumped out in front 6-2 before seeing things leveled at 6-3 in the second.  He would rebound nicely though rolling 6-1 in the third propelling the U of R to the Championship.
The other two matches on that were unfinished included Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) at No. 2 who was up 7-5, 2-2 and Davydov who was tied at a set a piece at No. 4 6-4, 1-6, 0-1.

Redlands will now faceoff against the top seed and SCIAC Regular Season Champions, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, April 3 beginning at 11:00am in Claremont, CA (Biszantz Family Tennis Center).
