Redlands Baseball drops out of SCIAC Tournament with narrow road loss at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (27-15) played another competitive low-scoring game Friday afternoon, but they were eliminated from the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament following a 4-2 loss at No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer.

Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) got the Bulldogs off on the right foot as he doubled down the right field line to begin the game. Following a fly out by Rylan Morris (Fullerton, CA) that moved De Vries to third, Tyler Preece (Bellevue, WA) singled to right putting the U of R on top 1-0.

In the fourth the Sagehens scored the eventual winning runs. They tied the game on an RBI-double to right and then scored the winning runs on a two-run single up the middle. Pomona-Pitzer added an insurance run in the fifth pushing the lead to 4-1. Those runs, though, were the last allowed by the Bulldogs' pitching staff.

The final opportunity for Redlands to score runs came in the ninth.  Kaiya Saito (Bellevue, WA) opened up the frame with a single to left. Out number one was then recorded on fly out before CJ Brown (El Cajon, CA) walked bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of pinch hitter Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA). He would come up with a single to center to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. The following two batters, however, struck out and grounded out to end the game.

Saito had three of the Bulldogs' nine hits. Brett Edwards (Santa Monica, A) made the start with two starters used and another hurt and went 3.1 innings with three runs allowed. Aziz Bishop (Baltimore, MD) threw 1.2 innings with one run allowed. Tanner Currier (Brawley, CA), Kyler Bacosa (San Jose, CA), and Gavin Duenez (Redlands, CA) combined to throw three scoreless innings to end the game.

Redlands will have to wait for the NCAA Division III Championship selections to be announced next week to know if they will make the tournament with an At-Large bid.
