THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – On the second and final day of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational the University of Redlands women's volleyball team (5-2) lost 3-1 to the University of Puget Sound (UPS) Saturday afternoon.
In the opening set the Bulldogs held a 5-2 lead thanks to kills by Makenna Vanhofwegen, Lily Houston, and Cecily Wagstaff. The Loggers, however, came back to tie the game at nine before winning 16 of the final 27 points to take the first set, 25-20.
The Bulldogs dominated the second set, winning seven of the first eight points on kills by Paige Sugg, Lily Kautai, and Makaila Brooks. That great start led Redlands to a strong 25-16 win that tied the match at one set apiece.
There were leads of 3-1, 12-10, and 16-15 in the third set, but UPS won eight-straight points to close out the set, 25-17.
Facing a deficit of as many as five early in the fourth, the Bulldogs took advantage of four Logger errors and got kills from Emma Murphy, Houston, Sugg, and Brooks as they were within two, 12-14.
Much like the third set, however, UPS closed out the set and match with an 11-4 run as the Bulldogs dropped their second-straight match after a 5-0 start.
Redlands will come home for their home opener on Tuesday, September 16 at 6 p.m. when they host Westcliff University inside Currier Gymnasium.
