CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Volleyball team (4-0) took down Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-11, 25-23) in a non-conference match for their first win over the Sagehens since 2017.
The Bulldogs held an early 2-1 advantage after a Sagehen error and a kill by Lily Kautai (San Mateo, CA) off a Lily Houston (Reno, NV) assist. Pomona-Pitzer, however, would go out in front soon after and hold that margin until a service error gave Redlands the 18-17 advantage.
A pair of attacking errors and a kill by Kautai off a Makenna Vanhofwegen (Buckeye, AZ) assist gave the Bulldogs three-straight points to close out the first set, 25-23.
It was all Sagehens in the second period, leading 18-8 before a 12-3 Bulldog run pulled them to within one, 21-20. Kautai and Makaila Brooks (Las Vegas, NV) had two kills and Emma Murphy (South Jordan, UT) added one of her own. Pomona-Pitzer, though, won four of the final six points to take the set, 25-22.
Redlands flipped the script in the third, taking a quick 8-2 lead. Houston, Brooks, and Emily Kitchin (Portland, OR) each tallied a kill and capitalized on four errors by the Sagehens.
The Sagehens were never any closer than four points and the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead with a 25-11 set win.
Avery Aminoff (Alexandria, VA) scored the first point in the fourth for the U of R. After a competitive start, they found themselves down by four, 19-15. A 10-4 run saw Kautai put away three points with kills and Vanhofwegen and 'Ale'amaikalani Paiva (Honolulu, HI) posted two assists as Redlands came from behind to secure the set and match victory.
Kautai finished with 16 kills, Vanhofwegen with 23 assists, and Paiva with another 23 digs.
Redlands heads to Thousand Oaks for the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational on September 12-13 where they will take on Linfield University, UC Santa Cruz, and University of Puget Sound.
