Redlands Women's Basketball drops back and forth battle with Pomona-Pitzer

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (12-3, 5-2 SCIAC) dropped a high-scoring back-and-forth game 83-77 against Pomona-Pitzer Monday evening.

In the opening quarter there were six ties before Olivia McIntyre (Spokane, WA) and Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) capped off the period on a 6-1 run, which gave the Bulldogs a four-point lead, 22-18, at the end of 10 minutes.

After a strong PP start to the second quarter Teagan McIlroy (Phoenix, AZ) knocked down a jumper to reclaim the Bulldog lead, 26-25.  But the Sagehens would outscore the Bulldogs 12-7 after that as they went out in front by four, 37-33, at the half.

Out of the break following a missed three by the Bulldogs on the offensive end, P-P came down and hit a three-pointer that extended their lead to seven, 49-42, with 4:53 to play. Redlands, though, came right back and scored six of the next eight to cut the deficit to one possession, 50-48. During that stretch AJ Wick (Henderson, NV), McIntyre, and McIlroy each contributed buckets.

A couple of minutes later with :39 seconds left McIntyre again got into the paint and finished, which tied the game, at 56-56, for the first time since McIlroy gave them the lead with 6:12 left in the first half.

The Sagehens, however, responded with a 12-2 run from the last few seconds in the third through the first three minutes of the fourth, which gave them a 10-point lead, 68-58.

Redlands did not back down though coming out of a timeout, forcing a turnover from Hosn, which led to a Kayden Sanders (Nipomo, CA) three. Wick then followed with a pair of jumpers before Sanders made her third three-pointer to help Redlands draw to within two, 70-68.

The Sagehens, though, closed out the game with a 7-of-9 mark at the free throw line handing the Bulldogs their third loss inside Currier Gym.

McIlroy was a very efficient 7-of-10 from the field for 16 points and she added seven rebounds. Sanders came off the bench and scored 13 points on only six shots and added six rebounds in only 18 minutes. Hosn had another all-around game with eight points, seven assists, and five rebounds.

Redlands heads to Claremont to faceoff with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) this Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m.
