Redlands Men's Basketball dominates Occidental in second half

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (16-2, 8-1 SCIAC) pulled away late from Occidental College in the second half Saturday evening during their 93-75 win inside Currier Gym.

The Bulldogs scored seven of the opening nine points thanks to baskets by Lucas Gordon (San Marcos, CA) and Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA).

The lead grew to as many as nine, 24-15, at the 9:37 mark when Omari Ferguson (Chicago, Ill.) found Derek Sangster (Sunnyvale, CA) for a three-pointer. Occidental, however, came all the way back to take their first lead of the game four minutes later as they went on a 13-4 run.

Cam Brown (Bakersfield, CA) got the lead right back for the U of R with a triple, which kept the Bulldogs in the lead or tied the remainder of the half.

Over the final three minutes of the opening period Jake Hlywiak (Valencia, CA) and Sangster each made three-pointers followed by Sangster and Brown getting into the paint giving UR a 42-35 halftime lead.

Gordon and Boston once again began a half strong, extending the UR lead to eight early in the second half, but the Tigers were able to respond with five quick points.

Redlands, though, countered the Occidental run with five straight helping them re-establish an eight-point advantage with 16:31 to play.

The Bulldogs maintained their two to three possession lead until an offensive rebound by Nathan Mattera (Fontana, CA) set up Gordon for a dunk, which was the first of 11 unanswered points for the Bulldogs.

With the lead at 16, 76-60, with 8:41 to go, the Bulldogs were able to put away the Tigers to seal their eighth win in-a-row.

After fouling out against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps during the week, Gordon did not commit a foul Saturday and posted a 20-10 game. Sangster had 25 points thanks to a 10-for-15 shooting mark. Boston finished with 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds.

Redlands remains at home for a game against Chapman University next Wednesday, January 28 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
