Redlands Men's Basketball posts another 100-point night in win over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Basketball team (10-2, 2-1 SCIAC) took down the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 107-82 Wednesday evening on the road.

The Bulldogs dominated on both ends of the floor in the first half. Nathan Mattera (Fontana, CA) had five points and Lucas Gordon (San Marcos, CA) another four to help Redlands put together an 11-0 run in the opening minutes.

A minute short of the midway point of the half Chozen Amadi (Richardson, TX) found Omari Ferguson (Chicago, Ill.) for a fastbreak layup after Jhace Boston (Bakersfield, CA) forced a turnover with a steal that helped extend the U of R lead to 15, 27-12.

Caltech came as close as seven at the 8:12 mark before Redlands had a response run of thirty of the next fourty points that was capped off by a Jake Hlywiak (Valencia, CA) three-pointer. That three was the final of six that were hit for the Maroon and Grey during the run that made it 57-30 at the half.

Opening the second half Ferguson got to the cup for a dunk and then found Gordon for a layup giving UR their first 30-point lead, 61-31. Despite the great start, the Beavers responded well, scoring 20 of the next 30 points cutting the lead down to 20, 71-51, with 13:16 on the clock.

Gordon, Ferguson, and Derek Sangster (Sunnyvale, CA), though, strung together six straight on the board in less than a minute and a half to end the extended Beaver run.

That response by the upperclassmen helped the Bulldogs maintain a 20 plus point lead the remainder of the game as they won their fifth game over their last six.

Seven different players scored in double figures. Donovan Ware (Palmdale, CA) led the way with 15 points thanks to five made three-pointers. Hlywiak had 14 points with 12 coming off three-pointers with the two combining for nine of the Bulldogs 17 made three-pointers.  Other notable stat lines included Ferguson with 12 points, four assists, three steals and a block, Sangster with 12 points, seven rebounds, Austin Unegbu with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting, Mattera with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and six assists, Boston with 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
