Redlands Football shows fight in second half against Chapman

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands football team (1-4, 1-2) lost 36-14 to Chapman University Saturday night at Ted Runner Stadium as the Bulldogs were unable to overcome a 29-0 halftime deficit.

With the score in favor of the Panthers, 29-0, with only 1:47 remaining in the third, the Bulldogs had a 3rd and 10 at their own 34. Tobey Schmidt ran for eight, and after a Chapman timeout, he found Julian Borrayo for six yards and a first down on fourth.

With only a few seconds remaining in the third quarter, Redlands decided to snap the ball and Schmidt handed it to Taylor Bowie off the left side who broke a tackle and outran the Chapman defense for a 52-yard rushing touchdown to avoid a potential shutout.

After conceding a touchdown on the first possession of the fourth, the offense got the ball at their own five after penalty pushed them back.

Jakai Torres, though, took the first play of the drive 42 yards to the 47. After a five-yard completion to Dee Young, Mark Mitchell III got into Panther territory thanks to a 14-yard gain.

Three rushes and a pass later, however, and the drive would end on a turnover on downs. The defense, though, held, forcing a three-and-out on the subsequent Panther possession.

Getting what would be their second-to-last possession of the game with 6:32 on the clock, Redlands began their drive with three Torres rushes for 21 yards. They then found themselves in 4th and 4 after a run of two yards, an incompletion, and a completion to Roshawn Lacy for four yards.

On that 4th and 4 Lacy ran a deep out and Schmidt connected with him, and off the turn up field, Lacy broke a tackle and finished off the play with a 36-yard catch-and-run touchdown to make it 36-14.

The Bulldogs tried an onside kick, but it went out of bounds, and after forcing a turnover on downs, they were unable to get anything going on their final drive with 66 seconds remaining.

Torres and Mitchell III both went over 90 yards with Bowie adding 56 and a touchdown to help the Bulldogs amass 222 net yards, though, it would be 252 if you take away sack yardage.

Overall, Redlands dominated time of possession, 34-26, and were able to run 78 plays to Chapman's 51. The lost fumble, the 0-2 mark in the red zone, and eight penalties for 71 yards in comparison to the two for 15 for the Panthers put the Bulldogs too far behind to have a chance.

Defensively Adrian Silva had the lone sack along with four tackles. Jesse Vega had five tackles with one interception which he returned 27 yards. Jeremiah Blackmon led the way with a joint game-high eight tackles and added half a tackle for loss.

Redlands returns to Ted Runner Stadium next Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host the University of La Verne.
