REDLANDS, Calif. – For the first time since September 2022, the University of Redlands men's soccer team (9-2-5, 6-0-3 SCIAC) beat Occidental College as they used a pair of braces by Thomas Lyden (Thornwood, NY) and Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) en route to a 4-0 win Wednesday evening at Farquhar Field.
In the 34th minute Landon Azavedo (Lake Oswego, OR) took a short corner, and got it back from Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA), before one-timing a ball to the back post where Lyden headed it off the keeper's gloves into the inside netting of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Still leading by one over the final 11 minutes, Darmanyan got Redlands out on a break after a turnover by Occidental. He found Hunter Byrne (Arvada, CO) who had his shot saved but Lyden was there for the rebound and finish in the 80th minute.
A few minutes later Beckton got the ball on the right side of the penalty area, cut the ball back, before laying it off to Darmanyan who took the shot on the same line before finding the back of the net on the bottom right side.
The exclamation point came in the final minute and a half when Darmanyan had a go from outside the box, which he curled on the ground off the far right post and in for his 10th goal of the season.
Azavedo now has 10 assists on the season, tying him for third most in single-season program history. The record is 11 held by Eric Rolwing and K.C. Nordfors from 2003.
Redlands will have to move on from this win quickly as they take on Pomona-Pitzer on the road this Saturday, October 24 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
