Redlands Women's Basketball holds off La Verne inside Currier

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (15-5, 8-4 SCIAC) got back in the win column Wednesday night as they held off the University of La Verne 57-48 in a game where both teams shot in the 30 percent range.

The Bulldogs had a great first quarter. Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) had two of her six points with a jumper in the paint with :34 seconds remaining helping Redlands take a 20-9 lead into the second quarter.

Olivia McIntyre (Spokane, WA) found Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) from behind the arc just over a minute after the initial inbound in the second period. Teagan McIlroy (Phoenix, AZ) then assisted McIntyre on a layup that helped keep the Bulldogs in front by double figures with 6:40 to play.

La Verne, however, would score 10 of the next 12 points closing to within two, 27-25, with 1:52 remaining. Redlands defense, though, clamped down and held ULV scoreless the rest of the half, while Hosn would add a jumper in the final :12 seconds to put UR up four at the half, 29-25.

Across five minutes of play in the third, the Bulldogs had failed to score, but their defense again did a great job, holding the Leopards to only six points as they were only trailing by two, 31-29.

AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) would then score four points during a 6-0 stretch that pushed Redlands back in front, 35-31. A late La Verne rally had the advantage at only one, 37-36, after 30 minutes.

The Leopards scored first in the fourth, which gave them the lead before McIlroy came right back and reclaimed the advantage for the U of R, which they would hold the remainder of the game.

The lead ballooned to as many as 10, 50-40, at the 3:31 mark, while the Bulldogs managed to do enough at the line, 5-of-8, the rest of the way to seal the win.

Hosn and Wick were the lone Bulldogs in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. McIlroy and Wick collected a combined 21 rebounds.

The Bulldogs started and closed the game strong, outscoring the Leopards by 19 in the first and third quarters, while they were outscored by 10 in the middle two.

Redlands has a bye this Saturday before traveling to Pasadena for a match-up with the California Institute of Technology on Wednesday, February 11 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
