REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's water polo team (2-10) hosted a pair of games Sunday at the Thompson Aquatic Center. In the first game they hosted No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) who they lost to, 23-6, before playing host to Santa Clara University who they lost to, 21-5.
Redlands 6 – Pomona-Pitzer 23
The Bulldogs got off to a great start. They scored twice off goals from Aubree Nabors and Alyssa Sorrell with Kiera Federline assisting Sorrell to tie the game at two with 2:10 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Sagehens then scored two unanswered goals to reclaim the lead, 4-2. Gianna Ratto, though, found Ainsley Killian with 44 seconds left to cut the deficit to one. With five seconds left P-P got their fifth of the quarter as they took a 5-3 lead into the second.
Redlands were being shutout in the second before Nabors found Sorrell inside with 58 ticks on the clock in the first half which sent the two sides into the half down six, 10-4.
Killian found Lucia Notaro for a goal at the 5:40 mark of the third and Nabors set up Emberly De La Vega for the Bulldogs' sixth goal on a powerplay in the opening minute of the fourth.
Notaro had a goal, four drawn exclusions, and a steal. Brooklyn Green had a pair of steals and a drawn exclusion. Sorrell finished with two goals and two drawn exclusions. Sofia Mather, who got the start, made five saves and took possession away twice before ceding the net to Natalie Abril who had two saves in goal.
Redlands 5 – Santa Clara 21
The Bulldogs got a quick start with Nabors finding Teagan May to tie the game at one in the first minutes. That, however, would be their lone score in the first half.
On a powerplay at the 2:54 mark of the third Nora Jackson assisted De La Vega. In the fourth, Green, Sorrell, and May all scored.
Nabors assisted on two goals and drew a pair of exclusions. Green had three points thanks to a goal and two assists. May scored twice as well. Abril and Mather both made five saves in 16 minutes of action.
Redlands returns to tournament play this Friday and Saturday as they head to Claremont for the Convergence Tournament. Their first matchup is with the University of California, Merced.
