Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Bulldog Women's Water Polo hangs tough early, but falls late at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's water polo team (3-14, 1-4) held a two-goal first half lead at Whittier College Wednesday evening, but they were held to only two goals in the second half as they lost, 9-5.

Each team scored in the first two minutes of the game with Lucia Notaro finding the back of the net for the Bulldogs as the game was tied at one after eight minutes.

In the first two minutes of the second quarter Teagan May found Aubree Nabors to reclaim the lead, 2-1. A couple of minutes later Marlie Potocki assisted Alyssa Sorrell to extend the lead to two, 3-1, with 4:27 remaining in the opening half.

Whittier would claim the final goal, coming with 45 seconds left in the half, but Redlands maintained their lead, 3-2, after 16 minutes of action.

The Poets, however, used that final goal of the second to go on a 6-0 run that had them in front by four, 7-3, with only 4:51 to play. Kiera Federline, though, helped the Bulldogs take advantage of a powerplay as she set up May at the 4:20 mark.

Their next goal would not come after the Poets scored their eighth goal and there were only 84 seconds remaining as Brooklyn Green tallied her first.

Overall, the Bulldogs were outscored by three on powerplays as they converted on only 11 percent, 1-of-9, of their attempts.

Notaro, Green, and Potocki all drew two exclusions on the Poets. May was the lone Bulldog with two points as she had a goal and an assist. Sofia Mather allowed only two goals and made six saves. Natalie Abril had five saves and faced 14 of the Poets' 27 shot attempts.

The Bulldogs return to the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC) for another Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup as they host Occidental College at 11 a.m.
