REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team battled in the heat Thursday afternoon falling 6-1 to No. 10 Bowdoin College inside the Verdieck Tennis Center, dropping them to 3-5 on the season.
Redlands dropped the doubles point after No. 2 and No. 3 were secured by the Polar Bears.
Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) at No. 2 fell 6-1 and the new pairing of
Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and
Eve Laurent (Portland, OR) at No. 3 fell 6-2. However, top duo of
Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) battled out a long match pulling out the win 7-6 (2).
Moving into singles, the Bulldogs attempted to pick up their energy. Kumar at No. 4 was the first match off, falling in straights 6-1, 6-1. Right next to her was Reynoso at No. 3 who competed well before falling 7-5, 6-2. At No. 6 Laurent nearly pulled off a comeback after losing the opening set and taking her second set to a tie break, ultimately dropping 6-1, 7-6.
Deng at No.1 had yet another successful day on the courts securing both a doubles and singles victory for the Bulldogs. Having won her first set, then losing the second, she came out in the third set taking it 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 putting the U of R on the scoreboard.
Next to Deng, at No. 2 was Whelan, who also had another close match. She dropped the first 6-2 but put together a late rally in the second only to fall 7-6. The last match on was Truong at the fifth spot. She had a close first set losing the tiebreak but failed to keep the momentum in the second set falling 7-6, 6-2.
Redlands returns to the court, Friday March 13 when they host Vassar College beginning at 4:00pm.
