U of R Women’s Tennis puts together strong showing in 5-2 win over Smith

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team battled in the extreme heat Wednesday afternoon coming away with the 5-2 win against Smith College inside the Verdieck Tennis Center, adding their fifth victory on the season.

The heat created some tough conditions for doubles to start the match off.  It did not have an effect in the slightest, though over the No. 1 team of Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) who cruised 6-2.  However, courts two and three were having a harder time finding their rhythm. Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) at No. 2 were edged 6-4 and Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and Eve Laurent (Portland, OR) would fall 6-2 giving the Bears the early 1-0 lead.

Despite falling behind it did not impact the Bulldogs who took five of six singles matches.  Deng at No.1 gave her opponent no mercy with an impressive double bagel 6-0, 6-0.  A few minutes later, Whelan followed with a solid 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2. Laurent was on the last court and kept the momentum, securing a straight sets win 6-2, 6-0 putting UR up 3-1. On court five, Truong was the match that clinched the win for the Bulldogs with an efficient 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Kumar at No. 4 put in a tough battle coming back from retirement in her last match, but was not able to pull through falling 6-1, 6-4.

The last match on was Reynoso at No. 3. Having lost the first set 7-5, it did not deter her from coming back in the second rolling 6-2, forcing a third set tie break, which she ultimately pulled off 10-6.

Redlands returns to the court this Friday, March 20 when they host No. 14 Amherst College beginning at 4:00pm.
