Bulldog Softball allows only one run in sweep of Bridgewater

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands softball team (7-3) extended their winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Bridgewater College on Monday, taking game one 2-1 and game two 4-0.

Game 1 (W, 2-1)

The Bulldogs jumped in front in the first inning on an Avery Provenzano (San Jose, CA) sacrifice fly to right, which allowed Brooklyn Bard (Long Beach, CA) to score.

After 5.2 scoreless innings by Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA), the Eagles finally broke through with two outs in the sixth inning. They hit a ground ball back up the middle and the tying run came around to even the game at one.

Redlands, however, got walks from Jenay Scott (Merced, CA) and Maya Holshoe (Redlands, CA), which gave Natalie Lopez (Long Beach, CA) a chance with two on and two outs. She would deliver, hitting a ball into left field, plating Scott for the game-winning run.

Gandara finished off the win with two ground outs and a pop up in the seventh.

Bard had a pair of hits and a stolen base. Scott was the other Bulldog to reach base safely twice, recording a hit and drawing a walk. Gandara finished her seven innings with no walks allowed and three strikeouts on only 86 pitches.

Game 2 (W, 4-0)

The Bulldogs pushed two across in the second inning thanks to an Adyson Kim (Millbrae, CA) infield single and a Saya Fujii (San Jose, CA) triple over the right fielder's head.

With starter Paige Ellinger (Temecula, CA) still holding the Eagle offense at bay, the offense got her an extra two runs in the sixth. Lopez flew out to center for a sacrifice fly ahead of Kim who flew out to left for her own sacrifice fly.

Scott had two hits and two runs. Kim added a pair of RBI's. Ellinger needed only 81 pitches for her two-hit shutout.

Redlands completes their string of eight games in five days tomorrow, March 3 as they host Gustavus Adolphus College with game one beginning at 12:00 p.m. (noon).
