REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands softball team (20-4) outscored Elmhurst University 22-3 in their two games Tuesday afternoon, bringing their winning streak to 10 games.
Game 1: Redlands 11 – Elmhurst 0 (5 innings)
A Maya Holshoe (Redlands, CA) single scored Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA) and Natalie Lowthers (Wrightwood, CA) and then due to an error in center Jenay Scott (Merced, CA) was able to come home to make it 3-0 after one inning.
In the second Gandara helped herself out with a three-run home run to right, which plated Avery Provenzano (San Jose, CA) and Saya Fujii (San Jose, CA) moving the score to 6-0.
The final five runs for the Maroon and Grey came in the fourth. The first was off another Gandara hit, which allowed Leila Gomez (San Bernardino, CA) to come around for the first run of the inning. Lowthers followed with a double that scored pinch runner Kayla Jackson (Bishop, CA), Holshoe picked up her third RBI and both Adyson Kim (Millbrae, CA) and Emi Connell (Bellevue, WA) each singled home a run.
After four shutout innings for Gandara, Caitlynn Griffith (Pala, CA) came on and finished off the run-rule victory with a 13-pitch fifth inning.
Game 2: Redlands 11 – Elmhurst 3 (6 innings)
After being shut out in the first game, the Blue Jays took advantage of an error to take a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bulldogs, though, got the run back on an Elmhurst error in the bottom of the frame. Holshoe, Kim, and Provenzano followed with RBI's putting UR in front 5-1.
Gandara continued her great hitting stretch with an RBI single to right that scored Brooklyn Bard (Long Beach, CA). Lowthers and Scott helped add two more runs for an 8-1 lead.
The last three Bulldog runs came on singles from Bard, Mia Cortez (Riverside, CA), and Scott.
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, CA) allowed no earned runs across the first three innings before Paige Ellinger (Temecula, CA) came on and finished off the game with four strikeouts for her fifth win.
Redlands has finally completed their 18 non-conference game schedule, going 15-3 during that stretch and will play their final 15 games against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents. The first being Whittier College this weekend with game one on the road at 3:00 p.m. this Friday, March 27.
