PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (14-13, 8-4 SCIAC) swept the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Saturday on the road as they picked up an 8-3 win in game one and a 12-1 victory to complete the sweep in game two.
Game 1 (W, 8-3)
The Bulldogs and Beavers were tied at three heading into the ninth inning. Redlands' runs came on a Tyler Barsness (Palm Desert, CA) double and a pair of solo home runs, one from Ian Umscheid (Beaumont, CA) in the third and the other from Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) in the fifth.
In the ninth, U of R put together a late surge. Barsness singled and was bunted over to second by Karlsen Drake (San Diego, CA). Eddy Stone (Petaluma, CA) then had the game-winning hit as he doubled to center for a 4-3 lead.
The other three insurance runs came from Tanner Gerosa (Huntington Beach, CA), who singled and scored Bubba Correa (Redlands, CA) and then crossed home plate on a throwing error, Chetcuti who also scored thanks to an error, and Anthony Thomas (Moreno Valley, CA) who doubled home Nate Miller (San Jose, CA).
Starter Erik Radder (San Diego, CA) went seven innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Tanner Currier (Brawley, CA) came on and got his third win on the season after throwing the final two innings.
Game 2 (W, 12-1)
Jesse Bullard started the scoring off with a two-run double in the first. Stone then followed with a single into right that advanced Bullard home for a 3-0 U of R lead after one.
In the second Aziz Bishop (Baltimore, MD) scored on fielder's choice with Umscheid recording an RBI.
In the sixth and seventh innings Redlands created additional space with a pair of three-run innings. The first three runs came on a three-run home run from Bishop. Then in the seventh Stone and Barsness had the RBI's.
The final tallies were off the bat of Mateo Carresi (San Pedro, CA) in the ninth when he singled home Barsness and then Bishop for the final of 12-1.
Barsness finished with five hits, the 24th such game in program history and the first since 2022 when Mark Kirkland did so against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS).
Not to be too outdone, Stone had a 4-for-4 day with a pair of runs and an RBI. Carresi and Bullard also had two hits, while Bishop reached base three times with a hit and two walks. He also scored three times and drove in three.
Brett Edwards (Santa Monica, CA) started and went seven innings for his third win on the season. He allowed only five hits and struck out four. Chad Kober (Castaic, CA) and Gavin Duenez (Redlands, CA) each worked clean innings in the eighth and ninth.
The Bulldogs will head to Thousand Oaks this coming Friday, April 3 for a single game at 3:00 p.m. against California Lutheran University (CLU).
