WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team picked up their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win Saturday making quick work of Whittier College 6-0 giving them their seventh win on the season.
The Bulldogs got doubles started quickly, bageling the Poets from top to bottom, earning them the early doubles point. At No. 3
Helaina Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and
Jasmine Sheets (Hesperia, CA) went 6-0, at No. 1
Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) went 6-0, and at No.2
Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) followed 6-0.
The Poets faced a tougher test in singles with the next five points going to Redlands. Whittier retired their number six player, meaning they only had players for five spots instead of the typical six, so Redlands adjusted their lineup to reflect this change.
Kumar on the second court continued the dominance with a double bagel 6-0, 6-0.
Sofia Ganshirt (Santa Clarita, CA) at No. 5 and
Eve Laurent (Portland, OR) followed suit with double bagels as well 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0. Sheets at No. 4 followed soon after with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Then the last match on was Reynoso at the top spot. She sailed through her first set winning 6-2 and fought through the second to come out on top 7-5 helping the U of R come away with the clean sweep.
Redlands returns to the court next Friday, April 3 when they host UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference match beginning at 3:00pm.
