THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The University of Redlands softball team (10-3, 1-0 SCIAC) opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Friday afternoon at California Lutheran University (CLU) cruising to the 6-1 victory.
After falling behind 1-0, Avery Provenzano (San Jose, CA) tied the game at one in the third and Natalie Lowthers (Wrightwood, CA) had the eventual game-winning hit to make it 2-1. Leila Gomez (San Bernardino, CA) and Provenzano each scored.
In the fourth Brooklyn Bard (Long Beach, CA) singled home Maya Holshoe (Redlands, CA) for UR's third run. Bard then stole second, which was her second of the game and 104th of her career, placing her one behind the program record holder Allyson Leslie (2004-07) who has 105.
In the fifth Adyson Kim (Millbrae, CA) plated Jenay Scott (Merced, CA) and Holshoe singled in Kim for a 5-1 Bulldog lead.
The sixth and final run for the Maroon and Grey came in the seventh when Holshoe beat out a double play, which allowed Scott to take the final 60 feet.
Bard, Lowthers, and Holshoe each had a pair of hits. Scott reached base safely four times with two hits and two walks. Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA) got her sixth win after six innings with only one run and five hits allowed. Caitlynn Griffith (Pala, CA) threw a scoreless seventh.
The two sides play a doubleheader at The Field of Dreams tomorrow, Saturday, March 7 with first pitch of game one set for 12:00 p.m. (noon).
