REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball (20-16, 14-7 SCIAC) team came away with another series win Saturday splitting their doubleheader with Chapman dropping Game 1 in extra-innings 13-7 before taking Game 2 11-9.
Game 1 (L, 13-7 | 10-Innings)
Jesse Bullard (Riverside, CA) connected on his 14th home run of the season, which tied him with Derek Bell for the single season program record and it scored Anthony Thomas (Moreno Valley, CA). The first run of the three-run first came on a Nate Miller (San Jose, CA) double, which plated Tyler Barsness (Palm Desert, CA).
The Panthers pulled one back in the third on a triple before an error on Chapman allowed Redlands to make it 4-1 in the fifth.
Chapman, though, scored the next four runs to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh. The Bulldogs responded in the eighth with three runs coming on a wild pitch, a Barsness RBI single, and a hit by pitch of Thomas with the bases loaded, which gave the Bulldogs a two-run lead heading into the ninth.
This lead wouldn't hold though as a one-out two-run homer tied it for the Panthers. Then in the 10th Chapman pushed six runs across to secure the win. Bullard finished 2-for-6, with a run scored and two RBI's, Tanner Gerosa (Huntington Beach, CA) was 1-for-3, scoring twice and Barness from the lead-off spot was 1-for-4, scoring once, driving in another and drawing two walks.
Erik Radder (San Diego, CA) started and earned the no decision after allowing five runs in six innings with seven strikeouts. Tanner Currier (Drawley, CA) threw two innings with one run allowed before Aziz Bishop (Baltimore, MD) conceded the tying and winning runs in the ninth and 10th innings.
Game 2 (W, 11-9)
It was Chapman scoring first in the second game of the twin bill with a solo home run to left center before a pair of U of R singles by Miller and Eddy Stone (Petaluma, CA) gave Redlands a 3-1 lead after one.
The Panthers responded tying the game in the second with a two-run home run, but that lasted less than a half inning with Ian Umscheid (Beaumont, CA) singling back up the middle plating Bishop in the bottom of the second.
The game was tied at four by the Panthers in the top of the third, and remained that way until the fourth when Miller hit a big three-run shot putting Redlands in front 7-4.
Over the final five innings Chapman pulled within one, 7-6, in the fifth on another home run but a second three-run home run, this time by Bishop, was enough offense to secure the win for the Maroon and Grey.
Miller had three hits and five RBI's. Bishop from his nine spot had three hits, three RBI's, and three runs scored.
On the mound Gavin Duenez (Redlands, CA) earned the win but it was Chad Kober's 2.1 shutout innings that secured it giving him his second save on the season.
Redlands has a bye next week due to commencement before hosting the University of La Verne for the first of a three-game series on Friday, May 1 at 3:00 p.m.
