CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team (9-7) had their season come to an end at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Wednesday evening in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Semifinal as they lost, 18-12.
Cailin Walker (Portland, OR), Gwenyth Guico (Camano Island, WA), and April Bryant (Danville, CA) scored in the first 13 minutes of the game, while the Bulldog defense held the Athenas to just two goals, including a scoreless effort for more than nine minutes, as they were up 3-2 inside two minutes to play in the opening quarter.
CMS responded with the final tally of the first and the first six of the second quarter as the Bulldogs found themselves down six, 9-3, with just over a minute remaining in the first half.
Bryant, though, found Nicole Sanders (Irvine, CA) for the final tally as time expired in the first half, which was the first of back-to-back connections for Sanders bringing the U of R back to within four, 9-5, with 12:45 on the clock.
A 3-0 Athena run pushed the deficit to seven, 12-5, before a pair of Ruby Czajkowski (Charlotte, NC) goals in the middle of the third cut the lead to five with 6:41 on the clock.
Down seven in the last minute of the third, Sophia Rangel (Woodland Hills, CA) scored with a player advantage with :13 ticks to go. Czajkowski made it a quick 2-0 run at the 13:08 mark of the fourth for the Maroon and Grey, but CMS scored the next two to put the game away.
Guico, Emily Webster (Ladera Ranch, CA), and Walker scored the final three Bulldog goals.
Despite the 18 goals allowed, Courtney Myers (Gig Harbor, WA) made it a game with 17 saves, which is the sixth most in program history. The 17 saves moves her into 11th place with 113 single season saves. Her final save percentage of .456 is seventh highest.
Webster ends her career with 234 points, fourth most in program history, and 195 goals (3rd). Walker finishes her career with 70 career assists, fourth most. Jenny Quinonez Diaz (Menlo Park, CA) ends her Bulldog career with 75 caused turnovers, 10th most, and Natalie Schumann (Murrieta, CA) finishes with 73 caused turnovers, 11th most.
The Bulldogs, and first year head coach Sean Hansen, finish the season 9-7 overall and 5-5 in SCIAC. They finished in third place in the regular season for only the second time in the last nine seasons, not including COVID-19 seasons.
