Redlands Men’s Tennis rolls past Occidental

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Tennis team breezed through another win as they took down fellow Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competitor, Occidental College, 6-1 Saturday afternoon inside the Verdieck Tennis Center. With the win the Bulldogs extend their winning streak to three and improve to 8-8, 2-1 SCIAC.

The Bulldogs swept doubles across the board, easily ensuring the doubles point went to Redlands. The No.1 team of Vitomir Petcov (Portland, OR) and MJ Abarca (San Diego, CA) grabbed the first win of the day with a solid 6-2 victory. Moments later, cheers erupted as Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) and Tyler Pyle (Lake Oswego, OR) on Court 2 won 6-3 grabbing the doubles clinch.  The last match on was at No. 3 where Jack Hinkle (Bountiful, UT) and Mateen Ghafarshad (Claremont, CA) took care of business wrapping up doubles 6-4.

Singles did not look promising for the Tigers either, as the Bulldogs would put up the next three points to clinch the win 4-0. Hinkle on the fourth court had the most efficient match yet 6-0,6-3—sailing through the first set in just fifteen minutes.  Petcov on the top court followed suit with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory.  Next to him, Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) got the clinch point for the Bulldogs after a solid 6-3, 6-0 victory.

The Tigers received their only point of the day at No. 3 where Abarca who was making a comeback in the second set would fall in straight sets, 6-2,6-4.

William Pullin (Peachtree City, GA) at No. 5 and Ghafarshad at No. 6 were the last two matches on—both of their first sets were long battles, one of which went to a tiebreak. But Pullin would pull out his win 7-5, 6-2 and Ghafarshad followed with a 7-6, 6-1 clinch.

Redlands returns to the court this Friday, April 10 when they host Caltech beginning at 5:00pm inside the Verdieck Tennis Center.
