U of R Women's Lacrosse uses dominant first quarter to defeat Occidental

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team (8-4, 4-3 SCIAC) used a 9-0 run to begin the game to secure a 15-7 home victory over Occidental College Wednesday evening at Farquhar Field.

It was all Bulldogs in the first 22 minutes getting tallies from six different players including Emily Webster (Ladera Ranch, CA), Nicole Sanders (Anaheim, CA), and Gwenyth Guico (Camano Island, WA) scoring twice and the trio of Mallory Morrissey (Coronado, CA), Ruby Czajkowski (Charlotte, NC), and Ella Batarse (Porter Ranch, CA) all adding another. Sophia Rangel and Maya Weaver (Tustin, CA) each had two assists during that stretch and April Bryant (Danville, CA) with another.

Occidental, though, woke up with a strong defensive stand and found their offensive rhythm scoring four of the next five goals to pull within six, 10-4, with 13:46 on the clock in the third.

Webster would come back down :32 seconds later finding Bryant who beat the Tiger keeper with the first of the Bulldogs' own 4-1 run that gave them a comfortable nine-goal lead, 14-5, with 7:19 on the clock in the fourth. During the run Rangel scored her first two goals, while Webster tallied her fourth. Czajkowksi continued her strong passing with two assists.

The final connection came with :35 seconds remaining as Czajkowksi found a cutting Guico for the 15th and final goal.

Lizzy Weaver (Tustin, CA) continued to be a huge force on the defensive end of the field, recording six ground balls and causing five turnovers, both game and career highs.

Adding to her hat trick was Guico who caused four turnovers and won three draw controls. Cailin Walker (Portland, OR) had a joint game-high four draw controls. Vanessa Flexen (Murrieta, CA) added three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

In goal the trio of Courtney Myers (Gig Harbor, WA), Kristiana Dinsenbacher (Temecula, CA), and Malia Tauanuu (Santa Ana, CA) combined for the 60 minutes. Myers got her seventh win and had two saves.

Redlands remains at Farquhar Field for senior day this coming Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m. as they host California Lutheran University (CLU).
