Bulldog Softball grinds out 7-5 win over Sagehens in extra-innings

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands softball team (33-4, 18-1 SCIAC) extended their winning streak to 23 with a 7-5 come-from-behind win over Pomona-Pitzer in eight innings Friday afternoon.

After conceding a four spot to the Sagehens in the bottom of the third, and then finding themselves trailing 5-0, the Bulldogs came back with four of their own in the next half inning.

Adyson Kim (Millbrae, CA) started the scoring off with a two-run double that scored Maya Holshoe (Redlands, CA) and Jenay Scott (Merced, CA) who both reached on a pair of singles. An RBI groundout by Natalie Lopez (Long Beach, CA) allowed Kim to come home to cut the deficit to two, 5-3. The final tally of the inning came courtesy of a single by Leila Gomez (San Bernardino, CA) that plated Avery Provenzano (San Jose, CA) who also reached on a single.

Natalie Lowthers (Wrightwood, CA) had a huge double to left center that led off the fifth and Kim capitalized adding her third RBI of the afternoon when she went the other way fiinding the three-four hole, which allowed pinch runner Kayla Jackson (Bishop, CA) to even the game at five.

In extra innings, the Bulldogs broke through with two runs on three hits.  Brooklyn Bard (Long Beach, CA) and Gomez both singled with one out. After Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Lowthers came through with a two-run single, which proved to be the game winner.

Caitlynn Griffith (Pala, CA) sat the Sagehens down in order in the bottom half and finished off the final four innings with no runs allowed and only one hit as she picked up her ninth win of the season, while remaining undefeated on the season. Paige Ellinger (Temecula, CA) was the bridge with 1.2 shutout innings in relief of Gandara who lasted 2.1 innings after giving up five runs on six hits.

At the plate Gomez and Kim each had three hits and combined for two runs scored and four RBI's with Holshoe and Lowthers adding two hits as well.  Gandara had a single and was hit twice.

The two sides end the regular season Saturday, May 2 with the Bulldogs' senior day prior to their doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. (noon).
