REDLANDS, Calif. - The University of Redlands Department of Athletics announced the addition of men's volleyball as its newest varsity sport, with competition slated to begin in the spring of 2028. This move reflects both the University's strategic commitment to growth and the surging national popularity of boys' and men's volleyball.
"Men's volleyball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and we are excited to bring that momentum to the University of Redlands," said Nikki Ayers, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. "This addition aligns with our mission to expand opportunities for student-athletes while building a program that is competitive regionally and within Division III.
Over the past six-years, participation in men's volleyball has grown by more than 50 percent, making it the fastest-growing male team sport in the United States. The addition of men's volleyball is particularly timely given Southern California's longstanding prominence in the sport. California remains the national leader in boys' volleyball participation and high school sponsorship, with deep-rooted success across CIF programs and a vibrant club system.
"Southern California is synonymous with excellence in volleyball," Ayers added. "Launching this program at Redlands allows us to tap into one of the most talent-rich regions in the country."
With the addition of men's volleyball, the University of Redlands will join California Lutheran University as the only current Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) members sponsoring the sport.
The Bulldogs will immediately begin a national search for a head coach, positioning the program to recruit a full year ahead of competition. Redlands plans to field an abbreviated club season in spring 2027 before transitioning to full NCAA Division III varsity competition in 2028.
