CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer team (5-1-3, 2-0-1 SCIAC) had themselves a battle Saturday night on the road within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play as they played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a 1-1 draw. Thomas Lyden (Thornwood, NY) scored a goal in the 16th minute but a 58th minute equalizer by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) split the points.
On only the second shot of the game, Redlands went up 1-0 thanks to a goal by Lyden off an assist by Taylor Bell (Highland, CA). Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) stole possession before laying off a pass to an oncoming Bell who then drove towards the endline before cutting it back to Lyden who took a touch and finished inside the right post with his right foot.
Jaden Nisperos (San Diego, CA) was called into action in the 21st minute to maintain the lead before Landon Azavedo (Lake Oswego, OR) had two looks stopped at the other end.
Nisperos had to save three Stag shots in the final nine minutes of the opening half with Ryan Hubbard (Aliso Viejo, CA) getting a look at the goal late in the 44th.
With that 1-0 lead in hand, the Bulldogs got off on the front foot in the second 45, taking two more shots that were on target in the first four minutes as Hunter Byrne (Arvada, CO) and Azavedo saw their shots stopped by the CMS keeper.
In the 58th minute Nisperos made a save that resulted in a corner and off that CMS took advantage of a loose ball in the box deadlocking the game at one.
Another two Nisperos saves in the 76th and 80th minutes kept the road point intact as the Bulldogs and Stags finished all tied at one.
Azavedo had half of the Bulldogs' eight shots and six shots on-goal, while Lyden converted on his lone attempt of the game. Nisperos had a solid game between the posts, making seven saves on eight attempts on target.
Redlands now prepares to host California Lutheran University this coming Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
