SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Redlands women's volleyball team (0-1) opened 2026 with a four-set loss to Schreiner University as they bounced back from a rough first two sets with a set win in the third and a highly competitive, two-point fourth set loss.
The opening set saw the Bulldogs tied at five after Makenna Vanhofwegen assisted Cecily Wagstaff, but the Mountaineers scored four of the next five.
The rest of the set Redlands were within one at 9-8, after a Schreiner error, before the Mountaineers created some separation in a 25-20 set win.
Tiana Mariner had an ace after a kill by Jaycee Hullar, off a Carter Meyers assist, for a 4-3 lead. Hullar then added another kill before Brooke Patsch and Wagstaff combined on a block which helped Redlands begin a run that put them ahead by two, 12-10.
A 12-1 response run by the Mountaineers, however, ended any chance at evening the match at a set.
Redlands scored 10 of the first 13 points of the third set as they never trailed and won the set, 25-17, and forced a fourth set. Wagstaff led the way with four kills in the set.
In another must win set, the Bulldogs conceded the opening four points and would fall by two, 25-23, as their late 4-0 run to cut the deficit to one, 23-22, was not enough.
Lily Kautai had a team-high 16 kills on a .317 hitting percentage. Vanhofwegen led with 22 assists, Mariner ended her debut with 20 digs, and Patsch, Esha Ball, and Wagstaff all had multiple blocks.
Redlands has the tough task of facing No. 4 East Texas Baptist University at 11:15 a.m. and host and No. 2 Trinity University (Texas) at 4 p.m.
