The University of Redlands is pleased to announce the hiring of Alex Ortega as the new Head Coach of its Men's Soccer program. Having spent his entire coaching career in Division III, Alex brings a proven track record of success at the collegiate level, exceptional leadership, and a passion for mentoring student-athletes as the Bulldogs prepare for the next chapter of their historic program. 
   
Alex joins the Bulldogs from Amherst College, where he served as the Assistant Men's Soccer Coach, where he helped lead the team to unprecedented successes. In 2022, Alex helped lead the Mammoths to a 14-1-6 record which included a NESCAC Championship and an NCAA Sweet 16 Appearance. In 2023, Alex helped lead a 17-3-4 campaign highlighted by a second consecutive NESCAC Championship and a National Runners-Up finish in the NCAA Tournament. In 2024, Alex helped Amherst compile a 16-2-4 record and return to the NCAA National Championship game to defeat Connecticut College in penalties to secure the program’s second National Championship. In his final season at Amherst, Alex helped secure the program’s 20^th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance before falling in overtime in the first round. In his four seasons at Amherst, Alex coached 18 All-NESCAC players, 10 All-Region players, 3 All-Americans, 1 NESCAC Player of the Year, and 1 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. While totaling a 55-12-17 overall record (17-4-9 NESCAC record), Alex was also part of the National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2024.

Prior to Amherst, Alex spent three seasons as an Assistant Coach at Randolph-Macon College, competing in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). In his three seasons, he helped lead the Yellowjackets to a 24-15-3 overall record (15-6-3 ODAC record), while coaching 12 All-ODAC players and two All-Region players. The 5-1-3 conference record in 2021 was the fewest conference losses for Randolph-Macon since 1999.

Before Randolph-Macon, Alex was on staff at Clark University, competing in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the 2018 season. With the Cougars, Alex helped lead the team to a 10-5-2 overall record while breaking the program record for goals scored with 52. Clark’s 3.06 goals per game were a top 15 mark in the country. Clark also saw two players named All-NEWMAC and one player named All-Region.

In 2015, Alex began his coaching career at his alma mater, Colby-Sawyer College, competing in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC). In his three seasons with the Chargers, Alex helped lead the team to a 32-22-1 record (22-4-1 NAC) record, while coaching seven All-NAC players and one All-Region player.

As a player, Alex had a highly decorated career at Colby-Sawyer College as a midfielder and forward. He played 80 career games out of a possible 80 while registering 28 goals and 16 assists, for a total of 72 points. At the end of his career, his 28 goals and 72 points were both ranked 2^nd All-Time in program history. In his junior season, he led the conference with 29 points on 13 goals and 3 assists. As a senior, he finished second in the conference with 30 points on 11 goals and 8 assists. Five of his eleven goals as a senior were game winners, which ranked 27^th in the country. He was named All-Conference in the 2013 and 2014 seasons while serving as a two-time captain.
