Despite tying the match score 1-1 with a win in the second game,
the No. 7 University of Puget Sound (WA) contingent outmatched the
University of Redlands women's volleyball team (0-1) by a 3-1
final.
After travelling north to Washington yesterday, the Redlands
student-athletes faced a tough road ahead at the Puget Sound
Premier, playing against four teams ranked inside the Top 25
rankings.
Opening up against No.7 Puget Sound, the Bulldogs hung tough early,
dropping the first game by a close score of 21-25. Redlands mounted
a comeback in the second game, trailing or tying the Loggers until
the 23rd point. A four-point rally at the end lifted the Bulldogs
over Puget Sound in game No. 2, 25-23.
Puget Sound controlled the tempo all the way in game three, winning
decisively, and the Bulldogs dropped the game 14-25. Redlands let
an 18-16 lead slip away in the fourth game and eventually lost
21-25 to the Loggers in the game that handed the match victory to
Puget Sound.
Sophomore middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) led the
offensive attack for the Bulldogs, notching 13 kills and recording
a remarkable .455 kill percentage.
Manning the defensive front was junior defensive specialist Lauren
Harding (Altadena, CA), who led the team in digs with 23. Junior
outside hitter Ali Massei (San Carlos, CA) also chipped in with 18
digs.
Junior setter Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) contributed by
providing 27 assists and one service ace.
