Redlands Falters to La Verne in Defensive Battle, 42-50

Box Score

Amidst a defensive battle between two once-beaten teams in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action, the University of Redlands women's basketball came up on the losing end of a game plagued by fouls and turnovers. The University of La Verne prevailed on Thursday night in Currier Gym, bolstering an early lead en route to a 50-42 victory.

La Verne held a three-point advantage with 12:53 to play in the first half but the Bulldogs tightened up their defense to slow down their opponents. However, Redlands' offense failed to ignite, shooting 29.1% for the game against a stingy Leopard squad.

With 33 turnovers between the teams, La Verne capitalized more effectively, converting 12 points off of Redlands' 15 turnovers. In addition, the Leopards gained 18 of its 50 points from the reserves while Redlands' bench produced only eight points.

The low-scoring game saw only one player from each team in double figures, with Leopard Corinne Watkins scoring 11 and Redlands sophomore guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) capturing her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The Bulldogs (10-5, 3-2 SCIAC) head to Cal Lutheran University on Saturday night for a conference doubleheader with the Redlands men's team. The women tip off at 5 p.m., with the men following at 7:30 p.m.
