On Saturday night, the University of Redlands women's basketball
team bounced back with an exciting 68-61 overtime victory against
the Regals of Cal Lutheran University. With the win, the
Bulldogs snapped CLU's three-game win streak and rebounded from
Thursday's tough loss to the University of La Verne.
The Regals came out early to take a solid lead and held Redlands
to only 23 points in the first half. With 15 minutes
remaining in the game, Cal Lutheran went up by 10 off of a timely
three-pointer by freshman guard Kendra Carter. However,
Redlands quickly responded with a 10-0 run to tie the game at
the 12:32 mark.
The Bulldogs seemed to control the rest of the game and
maintained a slight lead until the final seconds when the
Regals fought back to tie the game at 56 apiece with six seconds to
play.
Following a Redlands timeout, sophomore guard Mariah
Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) tried to go to the hoop but
her layup bounced off the backboard as time expired.
In the overtime period, the Bulldogs looked to freshman center
Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verde, CA) to lead the charge,
scoring six points on three layups, with her third putting Redlands
up by four with 1:14 to play. Despite looks from three-point
range, the Regals ran out of time and the Bulldogs prevailed by a
score of 68-61.
Junior guard Ali Bueno (San Jose, CA) knocked down 3-of-4
three-pointers in the second half to lead Redlands with 18
points. Barbetti-Cort posted her sixth double-double of the
season with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Carroll added 17
points to round out the Bulldogs' top scorers.
Redlands (11-5, 4-2 SCIAC) returns home on Tuesday night for a
7:30 p.m. non-conference game against regional rival Chapman
University.
