First-Half Offensive Production Pushes Redlands Men's Soccer Past La Verne

Box Score

The University of Redlands men's soccer team posted two goals in the final five minutes of the first half in Wednesday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match against the University of La Verne in Redlands, and the Bulldogs held on to prevail once again on Farquhar Field, 2-0.

Senior forward Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT) and senior midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA) faced a man advantage entering their offensive third in the 40th minute, setting up a chance to break the 0-0 tie. Gundersen passed to Kelly, who fought with a La Verne defender to gain possession. Kelly then distributed the ball to freshman midfielder Gabe Ramirez (La Crescenta, CA), and Ramirez lofted a shot to the right-hand side of the net, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.

Just less than three minutes later, senior midfielder Cale Rodriguez (Norwalk, CA) took a direct kick, which he weaved into another Redlands goal. He bent the ball from the top of the right wing into the box, and Kelly headed it in for his fourth score of the season.

The Maroon and Gray entered the intermission with momentum, having outshot the Leopards, 12-5, in the first frame.

Despite generating a number of chances to tack on a third goal, the La Verne defense held tough and held the Bulldogs scoreless for the remainder of the tilt.

In between the pipes for Redlands, senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) went nearly untested, stopping the lone shot on goal that he faced. Ryan Thompson withstood a barrage of Bulldog shots guarding the Leopard net, making six saves on the evening.

The Maroon and Gray dominated the shot margin, 27-10, and also took eight corner kicks throughout the course of the game.

Redlands (5-6-1, 4-3 SCIAC) entertains Whittier College on Saturday at 11 a.m. as the team enters its second round of conference play. Whittier pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over the Bulldogs when they last met on Sept. 16.
