Box Score 2 The University of Redlands women's basketball team
captured two in-region wins over the weekend during the 2009 UC
Santa Cruz Winter Tournament. The Bulldogs cruised by the Pirates
of Whitworth University (WA), 81-57, on Friday, and then came away
with a 75-60 victory against the host school on Saturday.
In the opener, the Maroon and Gray nabbed a five-point halftime
lead due to 50.0% shooting that included a 3-for-4 showing from
beyond the arc. The Bulldogs rolled past the Pirates in the second
half, holding them to a mere 27.3% from the field. Redlands poured
on 48 points en route to the solid 81-57 win.
The Bulldogs also won the rebounding battle, 41 to 35.
Sophomore forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) posted
her highest output of the 2009-10 season with 25 points, including
11-of-12 from the charity stripe. She connected on 7-for-16
shooting while also pulling down 11 rebounds. She dished out five
assists and added two blocks.
Senior forward Meghan Yetman (Danville, CA) backed her with 24
points off of 10-for-12 shooting. She also tallied seven boards and
four assists.
Senior guard Ali Bueno (San Jose, CA) rounded out the double-digit
scorers with 15 points, including 5-for-5 from long range.
Despite shooting just 30.8% in the first half against Santa Cruz,
the Bulldogs entered the break with a seven-point lead. They upped
their showing to 53.3% in the second half and pulled away from the
tenacious Banana Slugs, boasting a lead as large as 19 points with
four minutes to play.
The Maroon and Gray out-rebounded Santa Cruz, 38 to 29, and had six
fewer turnovers.
Redlands gained another impressive performance from Carroll, who
scored 23 points while grabbing six rebounds. She went 8-for-14
from the floor and hit both of her three-pointers. She also had
three assists, one block and two steals.
Junior forward Allison Clark (Altadena, CA) came off the bench for
17 points, going 6-for-7 overall.
Bueno added 12 points, hitting four shots from beyond the arc, and
Yetman chipped in 11 points, seven boards, five assists, and four
steals.
The Bulldogs (4-2) head to regional rival Chapman University on
Sat., Dec. 12, for a 5 p.m. showdown with the Panthers.
