Box Score The University of Redlands women's soccer team turned to
sophomore midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) for its goal
production in a 2-1 overtime triumph over Willamette University
(OR) in Redlands on Saturday.
A game that had unfolded in a similar fashion to the disappointing
0-1 defeat to Chapman University on Thursday quickly had a rewrite
to its ending as Phillips scored with just 12 seconds remaining to
equalize the tally at one apiece. She struck again with 21 ticks
left on the clock in the first overtime period to give the Bulldogs
their first victory of the season.
Redlands controlled the tempo from the get go, unleashing 13 shots
to Willamette's five in the first half. Unlike
Thursday's match, the opposition continued to struggle in
stopping the Bulldog attack as the Maroon and Gray posted an 11-3
shot advantage in the second stanza.
The Bearcats, however, capitalized on their best look of the game
as Andrea Rowan turned and ripped a shot from nearly 40 yards out
to put Willamette ahead, 1-0, in the 75th minute. After a number of
scoring attempts, the Bulldogs appeared to have dropped another
non-conference tilt despite outchancing their counterparts for the
majority of the contest.
With the clock winding down, Phillips uncoiled a blast from well
outside of the box, and Bearcat goalkeeper Kelli Gano fumbled the
ball before it fell into the goal. With a breath of new life thrust
into its cause, Redlands received three corner kick opportunities
in the first overtime period and also recorded five shots.
Phillips' score at the 99-minute mark came as a result of
crowding on the goal line, and she put a body on a ball that wound
up in the back of the net. Redlands had finally exorcised its
scoring woes, registering its most goals in a match so far this
season.
Senior goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) earned the
victory between the posts for the Bulldogs despite facing a mere
three shots on goal. Gano's otherwise flawless performance in
net was marred by Phillips' offensive outburst, and the
Willamette keeper shouldered the loss in spite of corralling nine
saves.
Three Bulldog offensive players helped facilitate the barrage of
shots. Sophomore forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) and Phillips
notched six shots apiece while junior forward Leslie Horner
(Portland, OR) uncorked five.
Redlands (1-3) kicks off its conference grind on Wednesday, taking
on Whittier College at home at 7 p.m. Head Coach Suzette Soboti
sits just four victories shy of winning 100 Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matches on her career.
