The University of Redlands men's soccer team sustained a
shocking upset at the hands of Whittier College on Wednesday in
Whittier, falling to the Poets in overtime, 1-2.
The loss snaps Redlands' longest-active winning streak
against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SCIAC) teams as the Bulldogs had won 21 consecutive matches
against Whittier prior to Wednesday's setback.
Senior midfielder Jeff Willey (Medina, WA) buried his second goal
of the season at 32:48, scoring off of a pass from senior forward
Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT).
Entering halftime, the Bulldogs held the upper hand in shots, 8-4,
and also outchanced the Poets in corner kicks (4-0).
Whittier went shot for shot with the Maroon and Gray in the second
half, and after firing three attempts on target that were saved,
the Poets found the back of the net. Adolfo Santos netted the
equalizer with just 1:41 remaining in the contest, capitalizing on
a rebound off of a corner.
Just 2:30 into the first overtime period, Srdan Jovanovic planted
the game-winning goal, ensuring the most improbable of victories
for the Poets.
Senior goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA) had a remarkable
outing in net, recording six saves on the evening. Two goalkeepers
split time in between the posts for Whittier. Paul Stepler-Camp,
who entered the match at 47:45, gained the victory after
registering three stops.
Willey uncorked a barrage of shots at the defense, firing off a
game-high total of 10.
Redlands (1-3-1, 0-1 SCIAC) hopes to rebound this Saturday as the
Bulldogs return to the friendly confines of Farquhar Field to
square off against Occidental College. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
