Box Score The University of Redlands men's soccer team hosted Whittier
College in an important Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up between the league's two
unbeaten teams on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs erupted for three
goals against the Poets and now stand alone atop the SCIAC
standings as the only team without a loss.
Redlands jumped out to an early lead as senior midfielder Gilbert
Flores (Woodlake, CA) danced along the sideline and ripped his
fourth netter of the year to gain an early 1-0 lead less than three
minutes into the game.
Both teams rallied back and forth but the score remained
unchanged for 55 continuous minutes, until junior forward Jamie Griffin
(Seattle, WA) posted a header on the far corner off fellow junior
forward Cody
Carlson's (Burbank, CA) assist. Sophomore midfielder Gabe Ramirez
(Pasadena, CA) also contributed to the scoring play by notching his
team-leading fourth assist of the season.
The Maroon and Gray gained an insurance goal at 79:26 as Griffin
struck his second score of the evening when he connected with
Ramirez's quick left-to-right pass.
Freshman goalkeeper Andreas
Silva (San Jose, CA) looked solid between the pipes,
registering six saves over the 90 minutes.
Ironically, Whittier held a slight shot advantage at 14-11, but
Redlands posted seven on goal and three past the Poet goalkeeper.
The Bulldogs controlled the corner kick opportunities with six,
compared to Whittier's single chance.
The Bulldogs (6-1-2, 5-0-2 SCIAC) compete for the third time
this week as they host the Leopards of the University of La Verne
on Saturday at 1 p.m.
