The No. 11 University of Redlands men's tennis team opened
the 2010 season with two victories on Saturday, posting a 9-0
shutout over visiting Occidental College in Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action and then taking
care of non-conference opponent, Chapman University, by a score of
8-1.
Against the Tigers of Occidental, Redlands swept the doubles with
sophomore Lander Jewett (Helena, MT) and junior Jeff Casserd
(Bellevue, WA) cruising to an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 slot. In
singles, freshman Conor Hyde (Peterborough, NH) defeated his No. 6
opponent by scores of 6-3, 6-1, before freshman Anish Nanda
(Cerritos, CA) clinched the team's win with his 6-0, 6-3
display at the No. 2 slot.
In the Bulldogs' second match of the day, the team quickly
jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles with Nanda and junior Keven
Wong (Kaneohe, HI) taking down their opponents in the top spot with
an 8-2 showing and freshman Kevin Kosanke (Bellevue, WA)and Hyde
teaming up at No. 3 for an 8-2 victory. The fourth and fifth team
points came at the respective hands of freshman Taylor Chaparro
(Burlingame, CA) at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0) and senior Matt Liebman
(Westport, CT) at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0).
Redlands (2-0, 1-0 SCIAC) takes to the road on Sat., Feb. 20, for
three matches. Half of the team heads to Caltech for a 9:30 a.m.
conference showdown while the other half travels to Biola
University for a make-up match against the Eagles, also beginning
at 9:30 a.m. Finally, the team reunites at Cal Poly Pomona for a 2
p.m. non-conference tilt against the Division II foe.
