The University of Redlands women's basketball team made
the trek to Thousand Oaks last night with hopes of avenging its
four-point loss to the Regals of Cal Lutheran University from
earlier this season. Not only did the Bulldogs accomplish that,
they did so in dominating fashion with an impressive 69-40 victory
on the road, solidifying their spot in second place among the
conference foes.
Redlands opened the game with a 4-0 lead and then quickly owned a
10-1 advantage when sophomore forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho
Palos Verdes, CA) made two of her game-high 14 points. From here,
it was all Bulldogs as the game was never in question with a
22-point halftime lead and a 29-point difference at the final
whistle.
Carroll added 10 rebounds to her 14 points for her 13th
double-double of the season. She also added one block to her
school-record tally for 41 on the season.
Junior guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA) put up 12 points
and five boards, while senior forward Meghan Yetman (Danville, CA)
contributed nine points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Seven other Bulldogs chipped in three or more points with a total
of 12 players seeing time on the floor.
Redlands shot 44% from the field, compared to Cal Lu's
showing of 28%. The Bulldogs appeared to struggle from beyond the
arc with a 29.4% display, but the Regals simply could not hit from
long range, going 0-for-11. The Maroon and Gray sank 20 of their 27
free-throw attempts, while Cal Lu went 12-for-24.
With the victory, the Bulldogs (19-5, 11-2 SCIAC) have now matched
the program's win record that they established last
season.
Redlands faces off with Occidental College (20-4, 12-1 SCIAC) at 5
p.m. on Saturday in Eagle Rock for a share of the conference
championship. The result also holds seeding implications for the
SCIAC Postseason Tournament, which begins on Thursday, Feb. 25.
