The No. 11 University of Redlands men's tennis team
captured a trio of victories during today's busy slate of
competition. The Bulldogs took care of the Beavers of Caltech in a
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
match in Pasadena by a score of 9-0, while six other players
simultaneously cruised past Biola University with an 8-1 showing.
The team reunited at Cal Poly Pomona in the afternoon and earned a
hard-fought 5-4 win over the Division II opponent.
Redlands downed the Beavers at every slot, with the No. 1 doubles
team of freshman Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) and junior Keven Wong
(Kaneohe, HI) and the No. 3 duo of junior Casey Fashouer
(Arlington, VA) and senior Matt Liebman (Westport, CT) both
shutting out their respective opponents, 8-0.
In singles, Liebman quickly defeated his counterpart at No. 3 by a
score of 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Taylor Chaparro (Burlingame, CA) sealed
the deal for the Bulldogs with his 6-1, 6-1 performance at the No.
4 spot.
Competing in a match that was originally rained out on February 6,
the Maroon and Gray handled the Eagles of Biola in a non-conference
tilt in Los Angeles. The team gained a 2-1 lead after doubles as
the freshman duo of Connor Hyde (Peterborough, NH) and Kevin
Kosanke (Bellevue, WA) topped their opponents at No. 3 by a score
of 8-3, followed by junior Cameron Spearman (Laguna Niguel, CA) and
senior Jeff Hammond's (Mercer Island, WA) 8-3 victory at the
No. 1 spot.
Redlands remained in control of the match by sweeping the singles.
Kosanke shut down his opponent at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-0 display,
while sophomore Lander Jewett (Helena, MT) came away with a 6-2,
6-0 victory at the No. 5 position. Junior Jeff Casserd (Bellevue,
WA) also provided an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Finally, the Bulldogs defeated the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona by a
score of 5-4. Although the final tally is close, Redlands actually
clinched the match with a 5-1 lead before succumbing in the final
three singles matches, two of which came in three sets.
The Maroon and Gray nabbed a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches
with Spearman and Hammond at No. 1 and Kosanke and Hyde at No. 3
both earning 8-4 victories.
Kosanke moved to 4-0 on the day with his 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5
singles. Liebman followed suit by taking down his No. 6 opponent,
6-3, 6-0. Finally, Hammond put the match away for the Bulldogs with
a strong 7-5, 6-0 showing at the No. 4 slot.
Redlands (5-0, 2-0 SCIAC) looks forward to another challenging bout
on Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. match at Cal Lutheran University,
followed by a non-conference showdown against Westmont College in
