The No. 17 University of Redlands men's tennis team dominated
the Tigers of Sewanee (TN) in Saturday's second match by a score of
9-0.
Following their 6-3 victory over No. 20 University of Texas at
Tyler, the Bulldogs returned to action on Verdieck Courts for
another non-conference match.
The Maroon and Gray quickly gained a 3-0 lead with solid
performances at every doubles slot. The No. 2 tandem of senior Jeff
Hammond (Mercer Island, WA) and junior Keven Wong (Kaneohe, HI)
took down their opponents, 8-2, and then the top duo of junior
Cameron Spearman (Laguna Niguel, CA) and freshman Anish Nanda
(Cerritos, CA) posted an 8-3 victory. Senior Matt Liebman
(Westport, CT) and freshman Taylor Chaparro (Burlingame, CA) earned
an impressive 8-4 win at No. 3 to secure the Bulldogs' doubles
sweep.
In singles, Redlands' momentum continued with all but one match
being decided in two sets. Nanda and Liebman each powered past
their respective opponents at No. 2 and No. 3 by scores of 6-0,
6-2. Chaparro stepped up with a 6-2, 6-1 showing at No. 4, while
freshman Kevin Kosanke (Bellevue, WA) rattled off a 6-2, 6-2
victory at the No. 5 position. Finally, freshman Connor Hyde
(Peterborough, NH) rounded out the team's two-set wins with a 6-4,
6-0 performance at No. 6. Spearman battled back at the No. 1
slot and won the Bulldogs' ninth point with his 6-4, 6-7(10), 10-6
win.
Redlands (8-4) looks forward to hosting its sixth match in a row
on March 17 at 2 p.m. against No. 10 Amherst College (MA).
