The No. 17 University of Redlands men's tennis team finished out
the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
season with a 7-2 victory over No. 23 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the
third-place match of the 2010 SCIAC Tournament. Redlands swept the
doubles and then captured four of the six singles matches en route
to the solid win.
In doubles, the No. 3 tandem of freshman Connor Hyde
(Peterborough, NH) and sophomore Lander Jewett (Helena, MT) scored
the first team point with their 8-3 showing. Redlands continued to
roll with an 8-4 performance by the No. 2 team of senior Jeff
Hammond (Mercer Island, WA) and junior Keven Wong (Kaneohe, HI).
No. 1 duo of junior Cameron Spearman (Laguna Niguel, CA) and
freshman Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) secured the sweep by taking
down their counterparts, 8-3.
With a 3-0 lead, the Maroon and Gray captured the first two
singles matches to clinch the match victory. Hyde posted an
impressive 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 slot, which was followed by
Wong's 6-2, 7-5 display at No. 6.
Redlands also gained victories by freshman Taylor Chaparro
(Burlingame, CA) at No. 4 and Nanda at No. 2.
COMPLETE RESULTS
Following the tournament, the head coaches voted on the
All-SCIAC awards and presented them to the student-athletes. From
Redlands, Spearman gained First-Team honors, while Nanda, Hammond
and Wong were named to the Second Team.
Redlands (15-11, 6-3 SCIAC) looks forward to competing in the
110th Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament on Friday, April 23,
through Sunday, April 25, in Ojai, CA. The Bulldogs must wait
until the week of May 10 for the NCAA's announcement about any
post-season opportunities.
