Box Score While hosting its annual "Breast Cancer Awareness Night," the University of Redlands women's soccer team fell short of the upset against the No. 8 Regals of Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday, allowing three goals for the first time since Oct. 23, 2010.
Cal Lutheran struck just eight minutes into the game as junior midfielder Lindsay Armenta (Camarillo, CA) slotted the ball into the low-right corner of the Maroon and Gray net.
The Bulldogs looked to even up the score in the 39th minute as sophomore forward Kinslee Isaman (Lake Stevens, WA) gave the squad a great scoring chance when she shot the ball within five yards of the goal. But the Regals' freshman goalkeeper Renee Standage (Denver, CO) made a gutsy save to end the threat.
At the 64:31 mark, the Regals converted once again with senior defender Rebekah Casas (Ojai, CA) taking senior midfielder Sinead Vaughn's (Simi Valley, CA) through-ball and putting it past the Maroon and Gray defense.
Senior forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) gave the U of R its best scoring opportunity of the second half with 8:48 left when she ripped a shot toward the Regal net. However, CLU's Standage stepped up to once again make an impressive stop.
Sophomore forward Jess Armstrong (San Diego, CA) completed Cal Lu's hat trick in the 85th minute with a goal from nearly 40 yards out.
Redlands' junior goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) recorded three saves in the opening frame, while sophomore Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) grabbed four saves in the final 45 minutes.
Overall, the Bulldogs put up solid offensive numbers by notching 17 shots to the Regals' 19.
Redlands (7-4-1, 4-4-0) goes on the road next to face off against Whittier College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
