Box Score The No. 15 University of Redlands men's soccer program came up short in Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament final as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags earned the automatic berth to the NCAA Championships by way of a shootout at Farquhar Field. After 45 scoreless minutes, regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, which was followed by two 10-minute overtime periods. The Stags finally advanced with a 4-2 performance in the shootout.
Following back-to-back misses by the Bulldogs, CMS freshman defender Jaison Kimura wrapped up the contest by converting his shootout opportunity for the game-winner.
Sophomore midfielder Will Walker (Folsom, CA) and junior forward Alex Laughton (Pleasanton, CA) gave the Maroon and Gray a fighting chance, notching home the team's only shootout goals.
With more than 500 fans filling up Farquhar Field, intensity filled the air from the opening whistle. Both squads battled back and forth through the extended game, going stride-for-stride with each offensive attack. In the first half, both teams failed to light up the scoreboard but had several key opportunities.
Momentum shifted toward the Bulldogs in the early moments of the second half when freshman forward Matej Kustura (Las Vegas, NV) laced a netter into the Stags' cage in the 63rd minute. Kustura recorded the game's first score off of Laughton's quick touch inside of the box.
The Stags responded almost immediately, racing down the pitch to quickly set up a corner kick. Senior defender Sam Ullman placed the corner on the backside of the net where senior forward Eric Bean punched in a header to even up the match.
During the overtime sessions, the Bulldogs dominated the stat sheet but missed out on a clutch chance at the 107:20-mark when senior forward Cody Carlson's (Burbank, CA) penalty shot was blocked by Stag senior goalkeeper Federick Doar.
Senior goalkeeper Jason Smuckler (Woodland Hills, CA) performed admirably for Redlands by making numerous good reads off of his line while collecting six saves in the contest.
Overall, the Bulldogs out-shot the Stags, 23-20, but lost the corner-kick battle, 6-7.
Redlands (18-4-0) now awaits its NCAA Championship fate, hoping to grab an at-large bid after running the table in the conference's regular season and owning a national ranking of 15th. Fans may watch the selection show on Monday at 10 a.m. by visiting http://www.ncaa.com/sports/soccer-men/d3
