SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer team (1-0-1) had six different players score in a 6-0 win over Nelson University Thursday afternoon at San Bernardino Valley College as head coach Alex Ortega picked up his first win as a head coach.
The opening goal came off a Landon Azavedo (Lake Oswego, OR) cornerkick in the 23rd minute. Azavedo took a corner on the right side and placed the ball at the near post where Jared Keyvan (Costa Mesa, CA) got a touch finishing inside the post for a 1-0 U of R lead.
Five minutes later, in the 28th, Taylor Bell (Highland, CA) won a one-on-one on the right side and sent a low cross that the Warrior keeper could only get a slight touch on. Waiting on the other side was Thomas Lyden (Thornwood, NY) who calmly put the ball away into an open net for his first goal as a Bulldog.
Nelson fell unlucky in the 34th minute when a clearance attempt hit off one of their teammates falling to Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) who quickly pounced, finding the inside of the right post for a 3-0 lead that Redlands would take into the half.
With a fresh group of players on the field in the second 45, it took the Bulldogs some time to settle in, but they would keep the offense going in the 68th when Brandon Angulo (Sunnyvale, CA) took a corner finding the head of Mateo Ambriz (Ontario, CA) who flicked it to the far back corner of the net.
15 minutes later, in the 83rd, Angulo got himself on the scoresheet off an assist by Nicolas Janssen (Park City, UT). Janssen began the chance by undercutting an errant Warrior pass and then dribbling up the left side before cutting the ball back on a pass to the middle where an oncoming Angulo took advantage of time and space using his left foot to find the near post.
The Bulldogs outshot the Warriors 25-1 and 16-0 on shots on goal. They were also plus seven in corners, 9-2.
Following a couple of days off Redlands heads to Azusa for a neutral site game against No. 2 Trinity University (Texas) at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 6.
