No. 6 Bulldog Softball Succumbs to Top-Ranked Linfield in Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The No. 6 University of Redlands softball team ended its 16-game win streak with Sunday's back-to-back losses against the No. 1 Wildcats of Linfield College (OR) at the "Field of Dreams." Playing two hours earlier than originally scheduled to avoid the possibility of rain, the Bulldogs struggled offensively in the opener, recording just two hits in a 0-6 shutout. Redlands rallied for six hits in the night cap but left 10 on base en route to the 2-8 defeat.

The Bulldogs faced an early 1-0 deficit after the first inning and never recovered against the top-ranked team in the nation.

The Maroon and Gray's first hit came in the fifth inning when sophomore pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) singled to second base and beat out the throw. But a quick double play by the Linfield defense ended any chance of a scoring rally.

Redlands mustered another hit in the bottom of the seventh when freshman right fielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) doubled to center field with one out. She advanced to third on the next batter but was left stranded.

Uphold took her first loss of the season, throwing five innings while giving up 10 hits and five runs. Junior pitcher Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA) finished out the game for the Bulldogs.

During the second outing, Redlands put up the first run of the game to own a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded, freshman short stop Amanda Clark (Riverside, CA) launched a high sacrifice fly to center field, scoring junior designated player Rikki Scates (Redlands, CA). Scates moved around the bags after benefitting from two fielder's choice plays and stealing second.

However, it didn't take long for the Wildcats to respond, taking the lead with back-to-back home runs in the fourth.

Nonetheless, Redlands made it interesting by tying it up in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman left fielder Janelle Carrasco (Whittier, CA) singled up the middle to lead off the inning before moving to second on a sophomore third baseman Kirstin Milliner (Torrance, CA) sacrifice bunt. Carrasco made her way to third on a fielder's choice play and finally scored on a Wildcat miscue.

With the score knotted at two apiece, Linfield's bats woke up and fired off three home runs to score five runs in the final two innings. The Wildcats also pushed a run across on an RBI-single to left field.

Freshman pitcher Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) fanned five batters in six innings but allowed 11 hits in the Bulldog loss. Freshman closer Rachael Hachadorian (San Diego, CA) wrapped up the final inning, striking out two in the process.

Redlands (21-2, 10-0 SCIAC) looks to rebound on Friday when it hosts Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the "Field of Dreams."
