The No. 17 University of Redlands men's tennis team posted split results in Saturday's doubleheader against non-conference foes. The Bulldogs cruised to a solid 8-1 victory over regional rival Chapman University before coming up short against 10th-ranked Williams College (MA) by a score of 3-6.
Against the Panthers, Redlands quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles. Sophomore Connor Hyde (Peterborough. NH) and junior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) dominated their No. 2 opponents, 8-1, before seniors Keven Wong (Kaneohe, HI) and Casey Fashouer (Arlington, VA) recorded an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 slot. Seniors Cameron Spearman (Laguna Niguel, CA) and Jeff Casserd (Bellevue, WA) secured the Bulldogs' third point with an 8-3 performance at the top spot.
The momentum continued for the Maroon and Gray as Casserd and Bloom rolled to two-set victories by giving up a combined four games to clinch the overall match win. Casserd silenced his No. 6 counterpart, 6-1, 6-1, while Bloom recorded a 6-2, 6-0 dismantling at No. 3.
In addition, Wong, Hyde and Fashouer contributed singles victories at their respective positions.
Redlands returned to action during the afternoon but faced a much more formidable foe in the 10th-ranked Ephs of Williams. The top doubles duo of Spearman and Casserd earned an 8-6 triumph to cut the Bulldogs' early deficit to 1-2.
The Maroon and Gray dropped the first two singles matches before Bloom provided new life with his impressive 6-4, 6-4 performance at No. 5.
However, any chance for a Bulldog upset was squashed by Williams' fifth victory at the No. 4 slot.
Hyde recorded a come-from-behind win at No. 2 for Redlands' third point.
The Bulldogs (8-8) head into another challenging week of action by hosting top-ranked Middlebury College (VT) and No. 27 Gustavus Adolphus College (MN) on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Both non-conference tilts begin at 3 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
