Box Score 2 The No. 19 University of Redlands softball team celebrated its seniors with back-to-back five-inning victories over the visiting Regals of Cal Lutheran University on Sunday at the "Field of Dreams." While exploding for five runs in each of the opening frames, the Bulldogs posted 21 hits en route to wins of 10-2 and 12-3.
Senior third baseman Aleisha Martinez (Escondido, CA) made her day even more memorable with a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning during the opener.
After a three-run showing in the second inning, Redlands gained a two-run shot from junior right fielder Kirstie Bender (Lakewood, CA) for her second career home run.
Although the Regals rallied for two runs in the fifth, it wasn't enough to extend the game, leading to the Maroon and Gray's 10-2 victory.
Sophomore pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) earned her team-leading 13th win of the season after giving up just one hit in two innings. Freshman hurler Gabrielle Sciuto (Poway, CA) and sophomore thrower Jessica Wagner (Yucaipa, CA) combined for the final three innings, recording five strikeouts between them.
During the night cap, the Bulldogs answered an early one-run deficit in the first with 11 runs over the subsequent two innings. Redlands put together a nice string of hits while taking advantage of two CLU miscues. Highlighting this stretch of offense, sophomore left fielder Kirsten Milliner (Torrance, CA) ripped a single up the middle, scoring freshman shortstop Amanda Clark (Riverside, CA) and freshman center fielder Janelle Carrasco (Whittier, CA). In addition, freshman right fielder Amanda Lievanos (Anaheim, CA) recorded a double and a triple for three RBI.
After CLU responded with two runs in the top of the third, Redlands tacked on a single score in the bottom half of the inning, making it 12-3.
Uphold threw four innings for her second win of the day, fanning three batters in the process. The Bulldog defense helped her get out of a fourth-inning jam with a pair of well-executed fielder's choice plays.
Junior pitcher Breanna Ruelas (Brawley, CA) finished out the game for Redlands, striking out one and giving up a single hit.
The two teams combined for three fly-out double plays, with the Maroon and Gray's impressive performance coming on the final outs of the game.
Four Bulldogs recorded a multi-hit performance with Martinez leading the charge on her 3-for-3 showing. However, Milliner and Lievanos racked up six of the team's 12 RBI.
With today's sweep, Redlands (27-9, 15-5 SCIAC) moves back into a tie for first place with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The Bulldogs finish up the regular season with back-to-back road doubleheaders, competing at Occidental College on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by a 12 noon start at the University of La Verne on Saturday.
